The hospitality industry is changing and adapting to the evolving work environments around us. This year has been nothing short of a thrilling adventure as I had the opportunity to be part of collaborations that were uniquely focused on health and wellbeing at workplace, mentorship, and sustainable development. As a passionate advocate for these issues, the changes we are witnessing in the industry are very encouraging.
During the Get Set Go week at The Park Navi Mumbai, I had the privilege of conducting an engaging session focused on health and wellbeing for our team members. Celebrating our teams and expressing appreciation and gratitude, I emphasized the importance of health and wellbeing through interactive discussions and practical tips. Our aim was to empower our colleagues to prioritize their health amidst their busy schedules. The enthusiastic participation and positive feedback we received were truly inspiring, reinforcing our commitment to nurturing a supportive work environment that values the wellbeing of every individual. In this context, I often reflect on the words of Noam Shpancer: “Mental health is not a destination but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going.”
Another equally wonderful experience was participating in the Workplace Summit 2024: Building Adaptive Organisations, held at the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry. I had the honor of moderating a panel discussion on Health and Mental Wellbeing at Work, where I met incredible industry leaders driving crucial initiatives in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH), and overall health and mental wellbeing in workplaces. The insightful panel discussions, master classes, and engaging fireside chats provided many takeaways that emphasized the need for supportive and adaptive organizational cultures. It was empowering to be part of such vital conversations, recognizing the significance of mental health and wellness in supporting productive and inclusive workplaces.
I also had the honor of presenting my research paper at the National Conference on ‘Embracing Wellness and Sustainable Development in Hospitality and Tourism.’ This well-curated event was hosted by the Anjuman I Islam College of Hotel and Tourism Management Studies and Research. I am humbled and elated that my paper titled ‘Mental Health Awareness in the Hospitality Industry: A Necessity for Change’ received the Best Paper Award at this conference. This recognition not only validated the dedication that went into the research but also highlighted the critical importance of this topic, emphasizing that “Sustainability is not just about the environment; it’s about the people and communities within it.” The conference provided a platform to engage with industry experts, academicians, and students who were committed to nurturing a sustainable future. It was heartening to see how the event attracted a diverse audience, all eager to explore how we could collectively bring forth our industry’s commitment to wellbeing and responsible tourism.
The experience was a blend of learning and collaboration. We were inspired by speakers presenting their research and case studies on wellness and sustainability. Their perspectives motivated us to make a difference in the tourism sector, applying the knowledge gained in practical settings. I left the conference with ideas and strategies for promoting sustainability within my own work and community.
One of the highlights for me was meeting Padma Shri Dr. Zahir Kazi, the Honorary President of the trust that manages various educational institutions at Anjuman I Islam. Presenting him with a copy of my book, ‘Illuminating Her Way,’ was a moment I’ll always treasure. Sharing work with someone who inspires so many others felt incredibly fulfilling. I extend special thanks to the principals and faculty of Anjuman I Islam College of Hotel and Tourism Management Studies and Research for making the conference a resounding success. Their efforts in building an educational environment that encourages thought-provoking discussions and collaborations are commendable
Later that day, I had the opportunity to conduct a master class for the women team members of Aditya Birla New Age Hospitality, which was very fulfilling and empowering. Interacting with such enthusiastic young professionals reminded me of the vital role mentorship plays in nurturing future leaders. As John C. Maxwell wisely stated, “A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” It was wonderful sharing my experiences, insights, and expertise with talented women who are all set to make an impact in the hospitality industry.
As I reflect on these enriching experiences, I am grateful for the opportunities to be a part of such impactful events, all close together. They have not only strengthened my perspectives on wellbeing and sustainability but have also connected me with a community of passionate individuals dedicated to creating change.
